About Kaapschehoop
Our favourite little mountain escape
Kaapsehoop is small, historic village tucked away in the mountains of Mpumalanga, surrounded by forests, open landscapes and some spectacular views. It's best known for its wild horses, misty mornings and wonderfully laid-back character.
We hope you'll take some time to explore the village, find the wild horses, enjoy the mountain air and settle into the slower pace of the weekend.

Our Story with Kaapschehoop
Kaapschehoop has been part of our story for a long time. Jo first discovered the village almost a decade ago, and it didn't take long for Chris to fall in love with it too. It was one of the destinations for our very first holiday together, and over time we've returned for many weekends away.
We love the people and their stories, the little shops and restaurants, the surrounding forests and mountains, the waterfall and, of course, the wild horses. But more than anything, Kaapschehoop has always felt like a place where we can slow down and breathe.
It's a place of peace and quiet for us - somewhere we can escape the noise of everyday life, spend time together and come back feeling recharged and restored. So when we started thinking about where we wanted to get married, there was really only one place that felt right.
We can't wait to share it with you.
Our Favourite Local Spots
Kaapschehoop is a small village, but there's plenty to explore if you want to use some free time over the weekend. These are some of the places and activities we've enjoyed over the years and would recommend if you'd like to venture out beyond the wedding celebrations.
Whether you're up for a hike along the escarpment, a ride through the forest, a wander around the village or a long lunch somewhere cosy, there's something for everyone.

Scootours
For a little adventure, head out on a downhill Scootour through the mountains surrounding the village. The route winds through forests and plantations with beautiful views over the valleys below. It's a fun way to see the landscape, and a good option if you'd like to explore while you're out here.

Horse Riding
For a slower-paced way to explore the mountains, Kaapsehoop Horse Trails offers guided rides through the forests and surrounding countryside and along the escarpment. It's a beautiful way to experience the landscape. Advance booking is essential, and riders of all experience levels are welcome.

Day Hikes
If you'd like to stretch your legs, there are plenty of beautiful hikes around the village. Trails range from short walks to longer routes (including one to Adam's Calendar), with plenty of opportunities to spot the wild horses along the way. There's a small day permit fee, payable at several local businesses.

Blue Swallows
For bird lovers, Kaapschehoop is home to an important population of the endangered Blue Swallow. They can be spotted in the grasslands just outside the village, particularly during the warmer months. There are several good birding guides in the area. Advance booking is essential if you'd like to use one of them.

Local Shops
Kaapsehoop is full of little shops, galleries and studios, and wandering through them is part of the fun. You'll find everything from antiques to handmade jewelry, art and local crafts. Take some time, chat to the people behind the shop, and see what catches your eye. You never know what you'll find in Kaapschehoop.

Coffee and Snacks
The village has plenty of lovely spots to stop for a coffee, something sweet or a casual bite. Grab a legendary Eisbein at Bohemian Groove Cafe, pizza at Salvador's, or a caramel pancake at Uitspan. Most of the eateries are locally owned and managed, and there might be some live music or local entertainment along the way.
